Steven Waldman is a journalist, entrepreneur, digital content pioneer, media executive and national advocate for robust accountability journalism in the broadband age.

Waldman spent the first part of his career as a magazine journalist. He was National Editor of US News & World Report and National Correspondent for Newsweek, covering government and consumer issues out of the Washignton bureau.

In 1998, he founded Beliefnet.com, a multifaith religion website, which became one of the most respected content-and-community sites of its era. Beliefnet was the largest site in its category,  pioneering new approaches to the interaction of journalism and user contributions. It won the top editorial awards, including the National Magazine Award for General Excellence Online and the Online News Association’s General Excellence award. Time Magazine named him one of the “innovators” of the new millennia because of his work conceiving new ways to use technology to help people meet their spiritual needs. He served as both Editor-in-Chief and CEO of the company, which was purchased by News Corp in 2007.

From 2009-2011, he was Senior Advisor to the Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. He was the lead author of the landmark report, “The Information Needs of Communities: The Changing Media Landscape in a Broadband Age,” which NPR’s “On the Media” program called “one of the most comprehensive overviews of the US media ever produced.” He then chaired the Council of Foundation’s Nonprofit Media Working Group, a task force of leaders of nonprofit news organizations and foundations that identified tax obstacles hindering nonprofit news startups. As Senior Visiting Media Policy Scholar at the Columbia Journalism School, Waldman travelled the country evangelizing about the need for better accountability reporting. He then served as Strategic Advisor to the Pew Research Center, helping craft their new strategic plan.

He is the author of the national bestseller Founding Faith: How Our Founding Fathrs Forged A Radical New Approach to Religious Liberty. He has regularly appeared on national TV as an expert on religion, politics and digital media, and his written work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, The New York Times, Columbia Journalism Review, The New Republic, National Review, Slate and other publications.

He recently created Daily Bridge Media, which launched TheBrooklynGame.com, a site about the Brooklyn Nets (@TheBKGame), and is developing a startup related to life milestones. Waldman is a graduate of Columbia University and lives in Brooklyn. He has two children and is married to writer-turned-funeral-director Amy Cunningham.
